Sheriff Matt Olson
Sheriff Matt Olson was shot and killed on January 25, 1916 by a farmer in rural Barron County while he was trying to repossess a horse, he died at the scene. The farmer was later arrested by a posse and brought to the county seat to be held accountable for the murder. The suspect was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison on May 10, 1916. Sheriff Olson was survived by his wife and three children and is buried at Evergreen Cemetary in Prairie Farm, Wisconsin.
Sheriff Wally L. Larson
Sheriff Wally Larson was killed in an automobile accident while on duty on October 28, 1987. Sheriff Larson died of injuries sustained when his squad car collided head-on with a semi tractor-trailer. Investigating officers believe that he may have suffered a heart attack. Sheriff Larson had been with the Barron County Sheriff’s Department for 21 years, after serving with the Rice Lake Police Department. Sheriff Larson was survived by his wife and two children.
